Polls and pundits say Israel is the touchstone for the September 2011 special election in New York's 9th Congressional District. The 9th District, the most heavily Jewish in the nation, early became a referendum on Obama's Israel policy and attitudes.

OBAMA DELIVERS ISRAEL TO HER ENEMIES!
The Jewish community represents 30 to 35 percent of the NY 9th Congressional District with heavy Democrat registration. Obama's dismal performance on the economy and jobs, and his calls for higher taxes and more spending, have alienated many voters, including Democrats.
But that record is only part of what makes it so distrustful of Obama that voters are turning in droves to Bob Turner, the self-described conservative, Republican candidate in the race.
The simple truth is that Barack Obama has carved out a special, shameful unpopularity for himself as the most anti-Israel president ever – and it shows in the 9th District.
Of particular concern to the community is the looming vote on September 21 in the UN General Assembly that proposes to grant Palestine nationhood status just days after the 9th District election – on September 13th. The 9th District voters understand the grave stakes, and are showing their anger over Obama's flagrant anti-Israel stance. They reject the massive strategic risks to Israel's survival posed by Obama, and his undermining effects upon peace and stability in the region.
Unnegotiated Palestinian "statehood" IS a huge provocation certain to ignite untold violence. Such a "state" concocted by UN fiat would initiate terror attacks in Jerusalem or on other vital Israeli territory, and Israel's enemies would brand her necessary defensive actions "aggression" against a UN member state. Under a "Uniting for Peace" General Assembly Resolution vote, blue-helmeted "peacekeepers" could be deployed to invade Israel's sovereign lands.
In fact, United States troops, under the new-world-order command of the United Nations, could be ordered to invade Israel!

As observed by foreign affairs expert Caroline Glick, Obama is
Even today, Obama has refused to state outright whether or not he will veto the Security Council resolution on September 21 endorsing Palestinian statehood – even though a U.S. veto is the only sure means to shutting down this illicit, incendiary incitement to Arab intifada and war. This is a rogue resolution, operating outside the context of a peace treaty with Israel. Such proposal is an overt violation of prior UN Resolution 242, which requires a negotiated settlement between Israel and Palestinian representatives before any UN action may be considered on a Palestinian state. Yet Obama allows the Palestinians to gather support for this travesty and leaves Israel twisting in the wind. Is this any way to treat an ally?
New Yorkers are NOT buying it. Polls showing the two 9th District candidates in a virtual tie with just days to go in the campaign have made it already certain that the Jewish community will send a 2012 message of REJECTION loud and clear to Obama, in the 9th CD and around the country. Obama's anti-Israel policies FAIL with the American people; we are UNITED in her suppport; we will NOT abandon our ally Israel to her enemies.
TELL CONGRESS: OVERRIDE OBAMA & STAND WITH ISRAEL!
No doubt, Bob Turner has already done far better than expected in a "hopeless" CD for Republicans, by standing tall for Israel. A Bob Turner win – the first Republican victory for the seat since 1923 – would send seismic shock waves through the White House, and be an even bigger political boost for those defending Israel.
Turner has an impressive list of endorsements from New York Republicans – Donald Trump, Peter King, George Pataki, Michael Grimm, and Rudy Giuliani – but more impressive is Former Democratic New York City Mayor Ed Koch, who was an early and very vocal supporter of Turner. That's right; DEMOCRATIC Mayor Ed Koch is supporting Turner precisely to send a message to Obama that Jews will not support him in 2012 unless he changes his policies and attitude toward Israel.
In an open letter to the voters in the 9th District Koch laid out the case to support Turner by showing how hostile to Israel Obama has been compared to former Presidents and encouraging voters that they could play a role in the special election similar to that played by the state of Massachusetts in 2010 when Scott Brown was elected Senator. It has had a galvanizing effect in many quarters.

It is worth reading what Koch has had to say to pro-Israel Democrats. Comparing Obama to former Presidents, including George W. Bush, Koch writes:
The President's recent demand that Israel negotiate a settlement with the Palestinian authority – tying Israel's hands by demanding that the negotiations on borders begin with the 1967 armistice lines as the border, subject to agreed upon swaps – drew criticism from the American Jewish community. The President made no demands upon the Palestinian Authority. He did not demand that they recognize Israel as a Jewish state, if negotiations end successfully. Nor did he demand that Hamas, now part of the Palestinian Authority, forswear violence and agree to accept the Jewish state of Israel if negotiations conclude successfully. Nor did he demand that the Palestinian Authority state it will engage in land "swaps."
The President of the U.S., leader of a country that has been the only real friend Israel has ever had among the nations of the world, has ended in effect the special relationship which began with President Harry Truman, who first recognized the state of Israel over the objections of a long-time Arabist U.S. State Department. Lyndon Johnson protected Israel when the Soviet Union threatened to support Arab nations in a new war against Israel, by sending a U.S. aircraft carrier to the Mediterranean Sea. Richard Nixon resupplied the Israeli armed forces when in the 1973 so-called Yom Kippur War, Egypt and Syria launched a surprise attack on Israel.
President Obama's predecessor, George W. Bush, probably Israel's greatest friend among U.S. presidents, made clear that he would not permit the Arab countries to gang up upon and dismember Israel, stating that any settlement on Palestinian borders would have to take into consideration 'the facts on the ground,' a reference to the 250,000 Jews living in East Jerusalem and the 300,000 living in cities and villages on the West Bank.

Strong arguments, compelling words. Still, the REAL political conversion for Ed Koch is most telling, as he describes, "I have not recovered from my shock when I learned from a Gallup poll conducted in February 2010 that 48 percent of Democrats supported Israel and 70 percent of Republicans did. Those figures are permanently seared in my mind."
Ed Koch, ex-mayor, life-long Democrat, is a decent man for whom respect for truth and love of America and Israel trump the prevailing vulgar political calculations that are destroying his old party, leading our country to ruin, and imperiling the only democracy in the Middle East.
The 9th District seat was vacated by rising Democrat "star" Anthony Weiner, forced to step down after electronically sharing obscene pictures of himself with at least six women. So one might reasonably think the election would center on the candidates' moral rectitude, peoples' trust and comfort level with those running.
But as the election draws near even the Democratic candidate David Weprin and Obama's backers have finally realized the race is not about local issues, or party loyalty, but about Obama's hostility towards Israel. While Weprin has been portrayed as a carpetbagger, and he does not live in the district, he is an observant Jew who says he supports Israel. It still isn't helping him.
Despite trying to distance himself from Obama, Weprin has not been able to hide that he is essentially in the 52% liberal majority of the Democrat party that doesn't stand foursquare with Israel; he is an Obama establishment hack; a career Democrat Party operative in the New York Assembly who always toes the party line. He was handpicked by party bosses with no primary, because he comes from a powerful and connected political family. Until Bob Turner began surging in the polls, Weprin was calling for higher taxes, more spending and anything else Obama and the Democrat elite told him to support – or in the case of Democrat party betrayal of Israel, NOT TO SUPPORT.
Israel doesn't need any more fair-weather friends in Washington, and the 9th Congressional District knows it.
